Kings Avenue Primary School - (Gardening) Volunteers: 22 - 22 Lambeth SW4 8BQ King's Avenue is a large primary school situated in a disadvantaged community in Lambeth. The pupils at this school travel far and wide to come here as a result of three schools merging in 2002. Pupils come from very diverse backgrounds and generally quite deprived. Currently about 36 different languages are spoken in school. A very high percentage of pupils are eligible for free school meals, just over 50%. The school has taken part in previous years and would love to welcome volunteers again this year. Project: There are two courtyards surrounded by building on all sides and in these two areas the school would like to create a wet play area and a sand play area. In the wet play courtyard tasks include: clearing beds, weeding and cutting back foliage, planting sensory plants and helping install the wet play facilities. In the other courtyard volunteers are needed to dig out the beds and fill with large heaps of soil for the kids to dig; planting sensory plants; pruning etc and fixing bird tables/nesting boxes. There is also an area at the back of the school which is going to be the new environmental garden. This has become overshadowed by a large creeper so volunteers are needed to cut back and remove the creeper and also to set up some 'mini-beast hotels', bird boxes and other environmental resources. Project costs: Budget required to cover cost of materials |
